About The Camp

Where is it?

On the southern outskirts of Lichfield, Staffordshire.

What will I be doing?

Our job for this summer is to construct 300m of new towpath through a canal-side copse as part of the Darnford Moors Ecology Park. The path will be made up with timber edging and a compacted stone infill.  Contractors are currently on site building the canal channel and it is expected that we will also get to work on this section once they have completed their works.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

This length of canal is due to be affected by the HS2 railway which will now provide for the construction of a new length of diverted canal, and an HS2 nature and community remediation fund is providing a grant towards restoring the canal and creating a nature trail and ecology park.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
