The Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust isn’t content with restoring one canal – they’re working on two! This year’s camps will be focussing on the Lichfield Canal, which connects the Birmingham Canal Navigations at Brownhills to the Coventry Canal at Huddlesford Junction near Lichfield.
The camps will be working on the Tamworth Road site, which will be a hive of activity over the next few years. The Trust is currently working at the old lock 24, converting it into a straight channel. A new road bridge is being constructed at Cricket Lane by a housing developer, and the new lock 24 will then be constructed to the west of the bridge. This will open the way for extending the re-watered canal by around half a mile to reach Gallows Wharf.
Between the new lock 24 and Gallows Wharf, a new lift bridge is going to be installed to carry an existing footpath over the restored canal. The WRG camps will be constructing the bases for this bridge – installing steel sheet piling, diverting the footpath and concreting the new bases.
