This is our first talk of the autumn season, offered to our members.  It is sure to be interesting and informative.  It’s always a good sociable night too.

So, we all know about opening bridges over waterways carrying roads and paths but what about railways and trams? How do we line up the track and what happens when it’s an electric railway? Do you know what a rolling bridge is and how they can be made to work simply by filling a tank with water? Transporter bridges are fun too! Have you ever seen the Aegre or the Bore? How many locks with three entrances can you think of? Which UK lock has 12 gates? What were Tom Puddings and how did they work? Where can you take a canal cruise advertised as a cruise on the grass?

We’ll be thoroughly entertained by John Pomfret as he reveals answers to these questions and curiosities and you’ll come away enlightened!

Events

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
