Restoration of the Cotswold Canals is one of the largest projects in the UK. In the past, WRG and local volunteers have rebuilt Weymoor Bridge to carry traffic across the canal channel. This summer we will be spending a further two weeks diverting a nearby stream under the canal bed and then constructing the canal channel on top of the stream. The timing of this camp aims to allow the work to be carried out during low water flows in the stream.

About The Camp

Where is it?

Located in the scenic Cotswolds near Stroud the Cotswold Canals consists of the Thames & Severn Canal and Stroudwater Navigation. It is one of the UK’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

What will I be doing?

While the Weymoor bridge has been recently restored, the canal underneath it cannot be returned to water until a nearby stream has been diverted and culverted under the canal channel. These two weeks of Canal Camps (CC2023-05/06) will divert the stream and install a syphonic culvert to carry the stream under the bed of the canal. Once installed the canal channel will be reconstructed on top of the culvert.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

While WRG’s main activity will be towards the other end of this restoration project, there is activity all along the waterway. This work will enable the recently restored Weymoor Bridge to be returned to water.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
