Annual General Meeting 2024
Back

IWA’s 65th Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday 28th September at 11.30 a.m. at De Montfort University in Leicester, Hugh Aston Building – The Newarke, Leicester LE2 7BY

Members will be able to join the Meeting remotely or in-person (but will need to be present in-person to vote on the day).  Here is the link to register for the Zoom meeting: Meeting Registration – Zoom.  If joining remotely, you can still vote by completing a proxy form and submitting in advance – see below.

Please register in advance to help us plan arrangements (ideally by 20th September).

The Hugh Aston Building will be open to our members from 10.00 am with refreshments available.  From 10.30 am there will be a presentation on IWA Campaigns followed by a presentation on Restoration at 10.50 am, before an interval for tea and coffee.

The formal Annual General Meeting will be at 11.30 am, followed by a presentation of IWA National Awards at 12 noon. Two further presentations on Residential Boating and Sustainable Leisure Boating will follow, after the formal meeting has closed.

Lunch will be available at 1 p.m. from the University café. If booked in advance by Friday 20th September, members will be provided (free of charge) with a £6 voucher towards the cost of lunch, which includes a choice of sandwiches, wraps, tea and coffee. Please advise on any special dietary requirements. Attendees will be asked to pay food and drink costs in excess of £6 on presentation of their vouchers.

There will be plenty of time for networking and the opportunity to take part in a guided walk in the afternoon at about 1.45 p.m.

Our guide for the Guided Walk will be award-winning CRT Volunteer Rob Hetherington. The tour will start at Castle Gardens on what has become known as the ‘Mile Straight’ of the Grand Union Canal Leicester Line, which is a canalised section of the River Soar. From there, Rob will take us along the navigation to Lime Kiln Lock, where IWA 1967 National Rally of Boats was held, and enlighten us with numerous historic insight enroute. The distance is approximately 3 miles, which will take about 2 hours for a leisurely stroll, including commentary stops and your unguided return to De Montfort University via the city centre.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
