How IWA is organised

IWA is a charity governed by a board of trustees.

There are national committees that report to the board of trustees:

  • Canalway Cavalcade Committee
  • Events Committee
  • Finance Committee
  • Navigation Committee
  • Remuneration Committee
  • Waterway Recovery Group
  • Volunteers Awards Panel.

The members of these committees are appointed by trustees, usually by approving recommendations from the committees themselves following advertisement for members.  A full list of the current membership of each committee is available.

Essex Waterways Ltd is a subsidiary company of IWA and manages the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation in Essex.  It is run by a board of directors appointed by IWA’s trustees.  The company operates independently on a non-profit making basis, but is not a charity.

IWA members are allocated into one of 33 local branches, which are grouped into eight regions, plus IWA ScotlandThe region chairs are listed here.

Trustees, committees and members are supported by a small staff at the Head Office at Chesham.

The Association’s vision, mission, position statement, values and strategic objectives are set by trustees and regularly reviewed.
