The Adur is a historic navigable river which links mid-Sussex to the coast at Shoreham Port. In medieval times, our starting point of Upper Beeding, now five miles inland, was a shallow harbour; more recently an 1807 Act of Parliament led to dredging and three locks installed upstream at Henfield. The river remained in use transporting agricultural produce and raw materials for the nearby Shoreham cement works until 1929.

We will start at 11am at the Rising Sun pub in Upper Beeding, and cross the river to the remains of Bramber Castle which defended the old harbour, before crossing the meadows to the recently restored White Bridge, returning down the east bank of the river itself, a loop of around 2¼ miles. We will reserve tables at the Rising Sun for lunch at 1pm. After lunch there will be further opportunity to explore the river, Bramber and Upper Beeding for those who wish. WCs are available en route in the Bramber carpark, and at the Rising Sun at the finish.

So that we know numbers for the pub, please drop an e-mail to IWA’s Adur representative Nick Owen ([email protected]) by 11th July to let us know you are coming.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
