Guided Walk - Lancaster Canal - Crooklands Wharf and Gatebeck Gunpowder works
Back

Length of towpath walk 3.3 miles, 2.5 hours approx. Group size limited to 10 people.

Led by Nigel Hardacre.

This is an medium graded route, but good walking shoes or boots are essential. Walkers need to physically able to do 3 miles and above. We start and end on the canal  towpath but most of this route in undulating, and a bit more demanding that most of my other canal walk routes.

Meet at the old stable block, at Crooklands Wharf/landing stage , next to bridge 166. Postcode LA7 7NW

9.45am for a 10am start. Please note that are no WC facilities at the old stables/wharf or on the walk route. (Texaco petrol station ‘Canal Garage’, 3 mins drive from the start/meeting point on the A65).

The return part of the walk follows footpaths and tracks back to the Lancaster Canal and the old stable block at Crooklands. There is the Crooklands Hotel (pub/restaurant), across the A65 as an option after the walk has finished.

Well behaved dogs are welcome on the walk with the most of the route requiring them to be on a lead or under close control.

The walk route covers canal history and the heritage of the tram way route and manufacture of Gunpowder at Gatebeck.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
