IWA Shrewsbury District & North Wales Branch Winter Walk
Back

From Norbury Wharf (ST20 0PN) via Shelmore Woods and Shelmore Embankment, returning to Norbury Wharf

Starting at the millennium boulder by the main entrance to the wharf at 10.30 am, the walk is along a short stretch of lane before picking up the bridleway through the woods. Another stretch of lane goes downhill, beneath the canal, and up steep steps to the towpath for the return. The steps may be avoided (no extra distance) by walking half a mile along the lane to a ramp.

Total distance approx. two and a half miles. Open to non-IWA members and well-behaved dogs. Flat, comfortable, walking footwear is strongly advised.

Parking is available at Norbury Wharf (ST20 0PN), where the café opens from 8:30 am for breakfast, teas, and toilet facilities before the walk.

The café also offers light lunches, and the Junction Inn opposite offers a Sunday carvery (booking essential on 01785 284288).

Please pre-book your places on the walk by emailing: [email protected] and let us know all names in your party and a contact telephone number.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
