The Market Weighton Canal Trail is about 11.5 miles long and provides access to a unique and unspoilt north-south corridor, traversing rich farmland connecting the Yorkshire Wolds Way at Market Weighton, with the Trans Pennine Trail at the Weighton Lock.
Enjoy a leisurely walk, or a spot of fishing whilst engaging with a wealth of wildlife and history along the whole route. The trail connects the iron age settlements of old with eighteenth century canal locks and the surrounding habitat.
The northern entrance to the Market Weighton Canal Trail starts near the iconic Giant Bradley statue in the centre of Market Weighton. This scenic trail unfolds along public rights of way, spanning approximately 11.5 miles to reach the north bank of the River Humber. The initial two miles trace the path of the planned but never constructed canal. The subsequent four miles reveal the legacy of navigation rights abandoned in 1900, with some segments having been infilled. The final six-mile stretch, unfolds on a flat and easily accessible path, punctuated with various historical points of interest. However at the Washlands the path can be impassable when the canal is in flood. Additionally, accessible public roads provide access points along the trail, allowing you to tailor your walk in smaller, more manageable sections.
For those seeking further exploration the trail seamlessly links with the Hudson Way and Wolds Way in Market Weighton and connects to the Trans Pennine Trail at the Humber.
