The Lapal Canal Trust was established in 1990 by a group of environmental and canal enthusiasts with the objective of restoring the Dudley No 2 Canal from Selly Oak to Halesowen. The Trust is now focused on restoring the canal from Selly Oak to California.

Works undertaken last year created a new wharf and turning basin on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal to enable visiting boats to enter the Lapal Canal.

At present there is an informal path between a bridge and the towpath. Volunteers will be engaged in excavating the ground and building a new hardened path suitable for all users. This new access will consist of a switch-back ramp and pedestrian steps. A post and rail fence will be erected. The towpath there will also be upgraded.

About The Camp

Where is it?

On the southern side of Birmingham.

What will I be doing?

Building an access ramp and steps to link Selly Oak Park to the canal towpath.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Much of this section of the Lapal Canal has been recreated as part of a retail development, and work took place during much of last year to create a new wharf and turning basin on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal to enable visiting boats to enter the Lapal Canal. Our work in Selly Oak Park will complement this work, creating a new footpath ramp to link the towpath to a restored bridge in Selly Oak Park, and working towards reopening this length.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
