The role comprises the following activities:

Links with branches to:

• allow planning officers and heritage officer to share information and experience.
• improve communication internally and externally.
• coordinated regional responses to major schemes which affect London as a whole, including projects such as Heathrow Expansion.

Supports branches:

• campaigns to prevent developments whose character will have an adverse impact on the appearance of the waterways.
• campaigns, through the planning system, for new developments to recognise the heritage, environmental and amenity value of the waterways corridor.

Linking Internal:

• Links with the National Planning Advisory Panel to get professional advice and guidance on planning matters affecting the waterways in London.

Linking External:

• Links with the Greater London authorities to have waterways included as part of the London Plan.
• Links with navigation authorities Planning Departments to identify and protect London waterways heritage.
• Be London Region’s point of contact for questions on planning.

Trade and catering can be done by one person.

Aegre is one of the ways we communicate with members about our work to support the region’s waterways, which cover Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. We usually publish an issue three times per year.

The editor generally looks after, edits and creates the newsletter, following IWA’s policies and brand guidelines. Head Office handles printing and distribution.

You do not have to be a member of any committee, and you don’t necessarily even need to live in the region! Full support will be provided, and Peter will be pleased to give a fully supported handover and training.

What they do

Your main role is to help make sure the Canal Camp is a fun, well planned and safe experience.

What’s involved

Every Canal Camp should have an assistant or co-leader to aid and support the leader. You will be involved in many aspects of the camp (before, during and aſter) – either on site, in the accommodation or planning evening activities.

Required skills and experience

To become a Canal Camp Assistant Leader it helps to have experience and knowledge of supporting and leading groups of people to create safe, engaging and fun working holiday experiences.

Training and Support

You will receive ongoing support and resources from the Canal Camps team.

We are committed to the training and development of all our volunteers. Canal Camp Leaders will be encouraged to develop the skills necessary to enable them to run high quality and fun Canal Camps.

The main role of the leader is to motivate and organise the volunteers to work safely towards completing the canal restoration task and, above all, make the Canal Camp an enjoyable week. As a leader, you are responsible for the well-being of your volunteers 24 hours a day for the duration of the camp.

To become a Canal Camp leader you must have experience and knowledge of supporting and leading groups of people to create safe, engaging and fun working holiday experiences.

We are always looking for, and welcoming, volunteers to join our friendly band of workers on our regular task parties. A variety of work is carried out, including, painting locks, vegetation clearance, litter picking, and general maintenance. It is not a committee role, and there is no commitment, so come when you can. Help us to keep the canal and it’s towpath usable and a pleasant environment for all. Anyone can come along and join in! You don’t need any particular skills, and tools are provided.

Task parties usually occur on one Tuesday and one Sunday each month.
