IWA Oxfordshire Branch is looking for a volunteer Planning & Conservation Officer. Help us to protect the waterways by preserving the built and natural heritage along the Oxford Canal and the River Thames. This is part of a return to our activist roots.

This vital role is done by keeping an eye on local planning authority websites. You would submit responses to planning applications that may impact on the local waterways. Any submissions such as these would need to align with IWA’s aims and policies.

A knowledge of planning issues is useful, but not essential. The branch committee can offer advice on responses. This is a fantastic volunteering role for someone with a love for the waterways, but who isn’t in a situation to volunteer at the tough end of a shovel or a strimmer. Planning applications are monitored through council websites, and responses are generally submitted online. With this in mind, access to a computer and the internet is essential.

The role would also be responsible for responding to wider plans issued by local authorities. Again, these responses can be based on comments from the committee and co-ordinated by the Planning & Conservation Officer. Previous committee members have responded to planning applications alongside other roles. This is a real opportunity for someone to create their own position.

It isn’t essential for the Planning and Conservation Officer to attend branch committee meetings.
