IWA Chiltern Branch
IWA Chiltern Branch is looking for a Heritage & Planning volunteer. The role would suit someone active, who likes using towpaths and has an interest in finding out more of the history our heritage and how to protect it.
Canal architecture is very varied and is always at risk from insensitive development. Much of the heritage is not seen by the casual walker, cyclist, fisherman or boater but we all lose when even small technical details are lost and if we are unaware, this can happen in an otherwise careful restoration.
The value of our canals can also be damaged by development where the style and facades of planned building are not sensitive to the location. Canal & River Trust are involved in all planning applications that have an impact on our canals, and IWA has access to this information. IWA also has a central group with the skills and knowledge needed to advise branch personnel regarding planning applications or when heritage is seen to be at risk.
You will be encouraged to liaise with volunteers in other branches and the central group, as well as the local branch committee. Chiltern Branch waterways include the Grand Union Canal between Stocker’s Lock, south of Rickmansworth to Ship Bridge, Marsworth and both the Aylesbury Arm and the Wendover Arm.
The person in this role may elect to be a branch committee member or simply provide support to the committee; the only real requirement is an interest in making a difference.
