Social venue TheBoat

IWA Northampton Branch social gathering and talk.  Please note the change of venue to The Boat Inn at Stoke Bruerne, and  this one is afternoon – 2:30pm.

This months social gathering includes a talk entitled ‘The Canal Boatwomen Trainees’, and the speaker is Mike Constable.

Mike Constable is an authority on the female trainees of World War II who volunteered to work on the canal. They ran the cargo barges, taking on a very different way of life. Mike provides new insights into the role of these trainees and dispels the myth that they were ever disparagingly referred to as the ‘Idle Women’.

IWA Northampton Branch hosts social meetings, usually including a talk, for members to get together and exchange their boating and canal experiences and tips. All members very welcome.

Our social events are held once a month – on the 2nd Tuesday,  from October to May. They have been held in the evenings up to now, but after consulting members there is some preference for afternoons, so we will put a mix of both in –  please check the timings!  We’ve also moved venue to The Boat Inn, Stoke Bruerne.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
