The River Don Viaduct would have crossed the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation at Mexborough where it is still used as a commercial navigation, as well as increasingly for recreational boating.
Our view was that if the route goes ahead, the viaduct piers should span the full width of the canal and its towpath and provide the necessary headroom specified by the Canal & River Trust. The viaduct would have been a major landmark structure and our view was that its design should seek to seamlessly integrate with and enhance the location.
