August saw the return of the annual branch lock wind, held for the second time at Cholmondeston Lock on the Shropshire Union Middlewich Branch. The two-day event, held in mixed weather conditions including torrential downpours, raised several hundred pounds in a welcome boost for branch funds.
Over 70 boats were helped through the lock by a 12-strong team who, between them, logged more than 150 volunteer hours during the event, receiving donations and selling local produce and other items.
HELPING LOCAL RESTORATIONS
The branch area includes several restoration groups, the best known of which are working to restore the Montgomery Canal and the Shrewsbury & Newport canals, as well as to maintain the Whitchurch Arm off the Llangollen Canal and, hopefully, extend it closer to the town centre.
In 2019 and 2020, the branch has been able to support local restorations with almost £10,000 in grants, and although canal side events have largely been cancelled even in 2021, the return of fundraising in even a restricted form is very welcome.
MORE TO COME IN ‘21
While hoping for more and better opportunities in 2022, the remaining months of this year still provide two further fundraising opportunities. The popular pictorial calendar featuring local waterway scenes is in its 11th year, and the 2022 edition is now available from a range of waterside businesses as well as by mail order from firstname.lastname@example.org.
Meanwhile, from 22 October until 4 December, supporters and seasonal shoppers can find us selling a wide range of IWA Christmas cards at the Charity Card Shop at St Mary’s Church in Shrewsbury, where we would be delighted to welcome you.
Further details on both are in our latest branch newsletter.
Well-wishers can also support the work of IWA nationally in protecting and restoring Britain’s canal and navigable river network.
